Sierra Leone Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources has officially declared the reopening of artisanal fishing following the conclusion of a one-month closed season.

The suspension, which took place from February 1 to 28, 2025, was enacted following Section 10 (2b) of the Fisheries and Aquaculture Act, 2018. Its primary goal was to protect fish stocks and preserve the health of the marine ecosystem.

The Ministry expressed satisfaction with the results of the closure, emphasizing its crucial role in replenishing the nation’s declining fish population.

“The closed season was a vital step to ensure the long-term sustainability of our fisheries and marine resources,” said a spokesperson from the Ministry.

Artisanal fishing activities will resume as scheduled, with no restrictions, beginning at midnight on February 28. The Ministry also extended its thanks to the artisanal fishing communities for their high level of cooperation during the closure.

“We are grateful for the support of our fishing communities and stakeholders, whose cooperation was key to the success of this initiative,” the statement read.

However, the Ministry issued a warning against the use of illegal fishing methods and damaging practices, especially beach seine (draw chain) fishing.

“We will continue to maintain rigorous monitoring and surveillance of our waters, ensuring that violators are held accountable,” the Ministry cautioned.

The Ministry reiterated its commitment to sustainable fishing practices and urged all fisherfolk to continue supporting efforts to safeguard Sierra Leone’s marine resources.
